In the wake of the Orlando, Florida, mass shooting the morning of June 12th, 2016, at the Pulse nightclub where 50 people died and an additional 53 were injured, it has become clear that it’s time to bring forth a new dialog regarding self defense in America where active shooters are concerned. The idea that hundreds of people become trapped in a room with multiple exits with no plan to protect themselves or means of escape is inexcusable. Awareness of our surroundings and a personal emergency strategy is paramount in these deadly encounters.

As a self-defense instructor and a safety & awareness subject matter expert *, TS (Tim) Robinson states, “This is another sad day in a long line of senseless tragedies involving mass shootings that we continue to experience in America. It’s upsetting that these deadly events continue to occur on a regular basis in our society and innocent victims along with their friends and families get hurt, suffer and die from the actions of a “lone wolf” gunman. The issue I have against this is that much of it can be prevented, regardless of our right to bear arms.”

There is another way, according to Robinson. “I teach my students and clients to always be alert and aware of their environment. Take a few seconds upon entering a public place to locate the exits, imagine the possibility of a dangerous event that could occur, and then create a conscious drill in their head as to what to do even in the unlikely event of an active shooter or other deadly scenario unfolding in such a place. The few moments it takes to become consciously aware can make the difference between life and death.”

He further acknowledges, “We all want to enjoy ourselves and have fun when we go out, but these few moments of preparation and creation of “proactive defensive tactics” are critical to your personal safety and survival. We’ve all heard the saying that the best defense is a good offense? Consider this preparation as the “offense of self defense.” It is like being in a house that’s ablaze. You don’t run to the fire because you already have a plan of escape to put into action if/when the time comes.”
