GROUND DEFENSE 3 (vs. School Boy Pin & Punched)
From the mount (school boy pin & punching):
- Elbow or palm heel strike to attacker’s face / knee or kicks to the groin
- Grab attacker’s hands, pull down into the top of your chest (to keep from being choked)
- Back against the wall, being choked, arms extended
- Strike groin multiple times (punches / elbow / knees) and escape
- Buck hips and fling attacker off and roll into the fling so you end up on top of attack
- Grab attacker’s same side forearm and pull down to your chest as you arch your hips, tilting to the side of your hooked foot
- Hook one foot to the attacker’s foot (outside hook of opposite leg – usually your strong side)
- Protect your face with your hands – use previous techniques learned to hinder attacker’s punches
GROUND DEFENSE 4 (vs. Choke)
Choke escape (from the guard):
- Hands to shoulders (arms straight / extended); Attacker slides his hands around your throat
- Hands slide down to attacker’s hands (over his arms and cross grab)
- Force elbows down to break / loosen attacker’s choke (use hip buck for more power)
- This will bend attackers arms down onto your stomach / tuck your chin down to protect neck
- Now into “shrimp” maneuver
- Once both legs are on attacker’s hips, push hard and slide out from under attacker
- Attacker will pull away, grab attacker’s wrists, shrimp into bicycle kicks to face

DEFENSE AGAINST A KNIFE ATTACK (only if absolutely necessary)
Chances are you will get cut, however:
- If you see the knife, most likely they don’t want to use it
- There are 3 forms of knife attacks (in order of probability):
- Slashing (most common and non-lethal against the body)
- Stabbing (to the body)(could be lethal depending on the location)
- Downward Thrust (deadly but uncommon)
- Don’t show fear
- Speak calmly and softly – try to negotiate / comply with demands
- Protect your vitals (ball up like a “roly poly” – round out your back, bring your hands and arms in front of your chest)
- Shift your stance to the side to limit your target
- If you have to attack / defend yourself, attack the person not the weapon (e.g. kick the groin & knees, throw objects – target eyes & neck)
- Create distance / space as you maneuver around, get to the side of your attack (don’t stand in front of your attacker and move directly backward)
GROUND DEFENSE 1 (vs. Pin & Punched)
From the guard or half guard (Between your legs & punching):
- Lock your legs around body, work to control the arms & head, hug
- Move your head to avoid strikes
- Use knees and legs to make space
From the mount (school boy pin & punching):
- Buck hips up whenever opponent throws a punch
- Hook arms and hug / hold opponent
From the side (trying to strike with elbows, knees or punches):
- Control the arms
- Keep head opposite of striking elbows
- Use knee to block if opponent is trying to knee your ribs
GROUND DEFENSE 4 (vs. Sexual Assault)
Rape escape (from the guard):
- Hands to shoulders (arms straight / extended)’ One leg up, the other extended
- Turn onto side (opposite of leg up), extended leg moves to attacker’s hip (aka “shrimp”)
- Hands move down to elbows
- Body shifts to starting position, other leg moves to attacker’s hip
- Attacker will try to push away – grab attacker’s wrists and rapid bicycle kicks to face

HOW TO FALL TO THE GROUND SAFELY AND DEFEND YOURSELF WHILE YOU’RE THERE:
- Fall “safely” – tuck your chin to your chest to keep from hitting your head on the ground
- “Kickstand” an arm 45 degrees from your side to slap the ground and absorb some of the force onto your side vs. directly on your back
- Quickly turn onto your side and raise a leg to kick with. Use your hips and arm to rotate and keep the opponent from getting behind you. Use your free hand to retrieve a weapon in your pocket or on you somewhere
- When getting up, slide back and away from the opponent by pushing off your front foot and throwing your hands behind you to push off the ground and move backwards from your position
